MScISM Students Visiting WeBank and Tencent Headquarters in Shenzhen

On 14 March 2019, 51 MSc in Information Systems Management (MScISM) students and staff members spent a fruitful day visiting Chinese tech giants Tencent and WeBank in Shenzhen.

Students in these visits were shown how technology can be applied creatively and seamlessly into virtual banking, messaging, live streaming and gaming spheres. To commence the busy and meaningful morning at WeBank, students were introduced to the latest AI development by Prof. Qiang Yang, Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer of WeBank, and Chair Professor of HKUST Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Students have gained a comprehensive view about the company background and product portfolio of WeBank led by the Head of FinTech Innovation. The demonstration of the Enterprise Command Center, where active users perform real-world transactions, marked the highlight in the WeBank visit. The visit was wrapped up by the recruitment specifics sharing.

The students proceeded to a guided tour to Tencent Binhai Mansion in the afternoon. The exhibition route showcased Tencent’s server, business plan and a variety of products ranging from PC games to medical technology innovations. Some students “performed” at the virtual television production studio and some others competed against robots in a table football game.

Through the visits to the fastest-growing tech giants like Tencent and WeBank, MScISM students have gained precious insights into the real-world applications of technology and the operating back office of techno-businesses.

HKUST MSc Programs Office arranges company visits every term as part of the student experiential learning in the real business world.
